The history of Vermont is one of the major topics that has utmost interest to all the people coming over here. The first part of the history of Vermont is the Precolumbian history of this place. But not much information can be gathered about the Precolumbian history of Vermont. The native Americans were the main resider in this time. They were the professional hunters and used to travel a lot from place to place in search of prey. But with the invasion of the people from the European countries during the sixteenth century made the decrease in their number. During that time the total population of the tribal people was at about ten thousand.

The colonial history of Vermont began in the sixteenth century with the European people coming in this country. The spread of Christianity also began here at the same time. Jacques Cartier is believed to be the first European who stepped in this state. Churches and chapels were established in many places in Vermont. With the focus on the industries in the European world the profession of agriculture and other village professions were obliterated and the number of laborers in the factories increased. Gradually the city culture grasped the native village culture of Vermont. 1724 saw the first British establishment in this state. Fort Dummer was the first construction that was built by the British people. Lieutenant Timothy Dwight was the main man behind this construction.
The state of Vermont became independent in the year 1777, on January 18. The republic that was formed over here was known as New Connecticut. The Battle of Bennington was another incident that was of utmost importance in the history of Vermont. The republican government that was formed here received threat from the other governments in the US. At last the British soldiers took the whole control of this place. The legislature of Vermont was introduced in the year 1836 and law and justice in Vermont became systematized.
